Welcome to SLOVENIA

Information about SLOVENIA Slovenia has remained surprisingly tranquil in light of the of troubles which affected many countries in this region. Many of its cities and towns bear the imprint of the Habsburg Empire and the Venetian Republic, but it is modern Slovenia which is most impressive. Rich in resources, naturally good looking and persistently peaceful, Slovenia has been doing just fine since its break from the former Yugoslavia in 1991. Forest covers almost half of the country (making Slovenia one of the world's 'greenest' countries) but still it has much to offer the visitor. Its Adriatic Coast is a magnet for tourists in the summer months. In the Julian Alps the skiing is of such good quality that global competitions are held annually. The Karst region is said to have two faces – one above and one under its surface. This is because of the Škocjan Caves, of which there are over 1000. There are many festivals in the Slovene calendar. Kurentovanje, held every February for 10 days up to Shrove Tuesday, is the most popular Mardi Gras celebration in Slovenia Slovenia has been making wine since the time of the Romans, and it now produces many high quality varieties. Since WWII many Slovenian folk traditions have been lost, but traditional musicians and old-style cooking (heavily dependent on fish, venison and the dumpling) keep the beat alive In March 2004, Slovenia became the first transition country to graduate from borrower status to donor partner at the World Bank. What’s more, with its historical ties to Western Europe, it enjoys a GDP per capita substantially higher than that of the other transitioning economies of Central Europe
